SLJ Submarine Fun – Step It Up

Bob the Diving Turtle

For today’s Step It Up activity I was to create a cartesian diver in a bottle.  I was not able to watch the videos so I looked up my own.  I decided to add a little turtle to my pen top to make a diving turtle.   I really loved doing this activity.  Here is my turtle diving video. (please ignore my mum’s arm I found it hard to squeeze the bottle so she helped me)  the turtle sinks and floats because of the air bubble in the pen top and the density of the water.  when I squeeze is cause it to sink as the air is pushed up.  when I release the bottle it makes the pen lid to float.  I managed to make him bob up and down by changing the pressure when I squeezed.

SLJ Submarine Fun – Kick Start

Today’s kick start was to learn about Submarine’s and either draw one on paper, colour one in using website or draw one on Google draw.  I decided to do all 3 and for my drawing on paper I removed the background and added in one from Google search.

Can you spot the camouflaged sea animal in the first picture?

Did you know:

  • submarines are called subs for short.
  • scientists use submarines to explore the ocean and study ocean life.
  • a submarine has a ballast tanks that they open to fill with water to let them sink.
  • propellers move submarines through water.
  • they use engines, batteries, nuclear power or a combination to power the sub.
  • use complex equipment to find their way through deep dark oceans.
